[EN] This study examines the role of women in the evolution of municipal offices in early modern Castilian cities—specifically, their participation in the key governing positions known as regidurías—using the city of Salamanca between the 17th and early 19th centuries as an illustrative case study. While women’s legal agency was constrained by gender, age, and marital status, the study confirms that the increasing tendency for these regidurías to become hereditary and perpetual created the circumstances enabling female involvement. This participation occurred through various legal mechanisms—primarily guardianship, curatorship, legal representation, and property ownership (acquired via testate and intestate succession, entails, and dowries)—as well as other acts of asset disposition. Women—mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, aunts, and nieces—acquired, managed, and transmitted these regidurías but could never hold the office themselves; instead, they acted through male intermediaries (fathers, husbands, brothers, guardians, principals, etc.). In Salamanca, 57 women were found to have been involved in the ownership, management, and transmission of 24 of the 49 regidurías attached to the San Benito and San Martín benches. This involvement took place chiefly through the establishment of entails linked to the office, succession within those entails, inheritance, guardianship, curatorship, and dowries, and to a lesser extent through sales, litigation, powers of attorney, and the founding of chaplaincies. Generally, these women belonged to families of the lower nobility of Salamanca (caballeros and hidalgos); families of civil servants, lawyers, and university professors; a very small number of wealthy merchant-class families; and families of the high Castilian nobility—some of Salamancan origin—residing at the Court in Madrid. | es_ES |
