The exploratory analysis of the development of the Executive Function (EF), from an ecological perspective was acheived through the study of social-cultural variables and the functional mechanisms that are activated during the use of this psychological process in the daily activities of Colombian children of four, six and eight years old. For this purpose, it was used a multidimensional method that consisted of: the psychological assessment allow us to address the cognitive dimension of the EF, the behavioral questionnaire allow us to establish executive/dysexecutive behaviors, the social and cultural dimension investigate the cultural frameworks (conditions and lifestyles) of the families that foster the development of an appropriate EF in children. The functional dimension is addressed through observational analysis of how children use their executive functioning to complete and control one-hour of school tasks. This last dimension was used to determine the executive mechanisms used by children to perform executivelly in real contexts, such as school situations. The results showed that children improve their executive functioning with age, although variables such as their socioeconomic status, type of school, the range of productive home activities performed, and the learning opportunities offered to increase their control and regulation of their everyday activities explain the differences between the evaluated children. As for its functional aspect, we have found that children with high and low performance on tests of psychological EF employed different executive functional mechanism for controlling and regulating their class work. Both groups used most of their time controlling and regulating their school activities, however, the low performance group fluctuates in their ability to keep that control, occasionally using distractive behavioural patterns.
