Vulcanismo y cultura filipina en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

[ES] Estudio del proceso ilustrado que fue transformando la percepción mítica de los fenómenos volcánicos en la incipiente ciencia vulcanológica. La observación directa en Filipinas y la acumulación de datos empíricos de diferente naturaleza (relaciones de sucesos, testimonios de erupciones, expediciones científicas e historiografía) permitió el desarrollo de la ciencia española al mismo tiempo que alimentó las bases estéticas de lo sublime filipino. Se edita como anexo Carta dirigida al señor D. Rafael María de Aguilar sobre el volcán de Albay por Manuel Sánchez Valladares. Nueva Cáceres, 1800.

[EN] An analysis is made of the process that in 18th century tranformed the mythical perception of volcanic phenomena into the incipient science of Volcanology. Direct observation in the Philippine Archipelago and the collection of different kinds of empirical data (accounts of events, testimonies of eruptions, scientific expeditions and historiography) allowed Spanish Science to evolve at the same time that the aesthetical roots on the Philippine Sublime were estblished. In the appendix there is an edition of the Carta dirigida al señor D. Rafael María de Aguilar sobre el volcán de Albay por Manuel Sánchez Valladares, Nueva Cáceres, 1800.
