Nuevos desafíos y viejos problemas: algunos antecedentes históricos de la mediación lingüística y la interculturalidad en la España Contemporánea

Abstract

[ES] El descubrimiento de la alteridad reflejado en el contacto con lenguas, culturas y tradiciones ajenas no es un fenómeno reciente; en todas las épocas de la historia se han planteado dificultades imperiosas de comunicación entre culturas con distintos idiomas. Para ello se ha necesitado siempre de intermediarios que fueran capaces de tender puentes entre lenguas y culturas y de acercar sus modos de pensar y actuar. Conocer cuáles fueron las iniciativas que se idearon en otras épocas anteriores a la nuestra para facilitar la comunicación entre grupos lingüísticos heterogéneos puede ayudarnos a comprender mejor nuestra sociedad actual, cada vez más multilingüe y multicultural. Valorar su mayor o menor grado de acierto resultará también útil para evitar repetir sus mismos errores y para diseñar respuestas eficaces a las carencias de comunicación que hoy nos plantea el fenómeno de la inmigración. Con este objetivo proponemos una breve reflexión sobre algunos ejemplos históricos tomados de la época de la conquista de América y los relacionamos con otros contextos multiculturales como los que estamos viviendo en nuestra sociedad contemporánea subrayando la necesidad de profesionalizar la figura del mediador lingüístico y cultural.

[EN] The discovery of otherness reflected in contact with languages, cultures and traditions of others is not a recent phenomenon, in all periods of history have created difficulties imperative of communication between cultures with different languages. This has always needed intermediaries who were able to build bridges between languages and cultures and to bring their ways of thinking and acting. Knowing what the initiatives were devised in the past prior to ours to facilitate communication between heterogeneous language groups can help us better understand our current society, increasingly multilingual and multicultural. Rate greater or lesser degree of success will be also useful to avoid repeating their mistakes and to design effective responses to the lack of communication that we are faced with the phenomenon of immigration. To this end we propose a brief discussion of some historical examples taken from the time of the conquest of America and multicultural contexts relate to others as we are living in our contemporary society stressing the need to professionalize the mediator linguistic and cultural.
