Traficantes, armadores y hacendados: élite colonial hispano-cubana y trasvase de capitales en el siglo XIX

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo estudia el trasvase de capitales cubanos a la España del siglo XIX así como sus diferentes ritmos y las estrategias de inversión en la metrópoli. Se analiza, así, una primera etapa que cubre cronológicamente el período 1830- 1860 y en la que se produce una evidente adecuación entre la transferencia de capitales y los circuitos económicos del azúcar y una segunda, desde I860 a fines de siglo, en la que dicha transferencia se explica más por factores políticos que económicos. Es ahora cuando, ante la nueva situación de la isla, se acelera el trasvase de capitales y paralelamente el de un conjunto de hombres de negocios cuyo papel social y político en Cuba había sido muy relevante y cuya influencia en la España de la Restauración va a ser igualmente de una importancia extraordinaria. ABSTRACT: This article studies the transfer of Cuban capital to Spain in the 19th century, together with its different rhythms and investment strategies in the metropolis. Analysis is thus made of a first stage that chronologically covers the period 1830-1860 and in which there occurred an evident adjustment between the transfer of capital and the economic sugar circuits, and a second stage, from I860 until the end of the century, during which the transfer is explained more by politi- cal factors than by economic ones. That is the moment when, faced with the new situation on the island, the transfer of capital became accelerated and at the same time there was a transfer of a group of businessmen whose social and political role in Cuba had been of great importance and whose influence in Spain during the Restoration woLild also be extraordinarily important.
