Pinacoteca civica di Ascoli Piceno: Il medagliere della collezione Odoardi

Abstract

[EN]This piece examines the study of an unpublished numismatic collection in the Pinacoteca Civica of Ascoli Piceno. Given to Ascoli Piceno by Alessandro Maria Odoardi (1732-1805) a nobleman from that city and bishop of Perugia, the collection was studied and cited by several noted scholars: the Augstinian friar Luigi Pastori, first to describe the coins; the Perugians Baldasarre Orsini, Anastasio Rotelli, and Angelo Lupattelli; and the erudite friend of Mommsen, Giulio Gabrielli, who is responsible for the growth of the collection and the new exhibition in the Museo Civico. Currently the portion of the collection that has been studied includes about 930 pieces, among which are aes grave from the mints of Todi and Volterra, coins of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine origin, as well as silver coins from the Roman hoard of Santa Maria del Paggese (Acquasanta Terme).
