Abstract

This text focuses on the ecclesiastical tax transfers in favour of the Portuguese Crown in the late medieval period, through an analysis of the typology of taxes, the chronology of its granting and the justifications presented for its perception. While the justifications given by the monarchy remain framed by the legitimacy conferred by canon law, the clerics' resistance to its payment reveal an argument based on reality and on the good will to satisfy the fiscal needs of the Portuguese monarchs.

Este texto foca-se nas transferências da fiscalidade eclesiástica em favor da Coroa portuguesa no período tardomedieval, através de uma análise sobre as tipologias das exações, a cronologia da sua concessão e as justificações apresentadas para a sua perceção. Enquanto as justificações dadas pela Monarquia permanecem enquadradas pela legitimidade conferida pelo Direito Canónico, as resistências suscitadas pelos clérigos ao seu pagamento revelam uma argumentação baseada na realidade e na boa vontade em satisfazer as necessidades fiscais dos monarcas portugueses.

Although its validity is scrutinized throughout the entire period, this type of taxation shows an evolution in its typology and in its frequency, as the needs of the Crown increased at the end of the fourteenth century.
