Apuntes históricos sobre la hospitalización de militares en Tarragona (1713-1931)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe the beginnings and evolution of the hospitalization of military personnel in Tarragona (a port city located in northeast Spain). The origins date back to 1713, when the bourbon army occupied the hospital in the city of Tarragona to care for its own sick and wounded of war. This forced the administrators of the occupied hospital to rent a new building to take in the poor sick of Tarragona. This situation continued until 1750, when King Ferdinand VI agreed that the hospital occupied at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession should combine the functions of a civil and military hospital. From then until 1931, only part of the hospital in Tarragona was dedicated to the care of the military, with the Army being responsible for paying the living expenses of its troops.

El presente artículo tiene por objeto describir los inicios y evolución de la hospitalización de personal castrense en Tarragona. Los orígenes se remontan a 1713, cuando las tropas borbónicas ocuparon el hospital civil de la ciudad tarraconense para dar atención a sus enfermos y heridos de guerra. Ello obligó a los administradores del mencionado hospital civil a buscar y alquilar un nuevo edificio para albergar a los enfermos pobres de Tarragona. Esta situación se perpetuó hasta 1750, cuando el rey Fernando VI acordó que el edificio hospitalario –ocupado a finales de la Guerra de Sucesión española– combinase las funciones de hospital civil y militar. A partir de entonces y hasta 1931, solo una parte del hospital civil de Tarragona se dedicó para la atención de militares, siendo el Ejército el encargado de sufragar los costos derivados de la estancia de sus tropas.

L'objectif de cet article est de décrire les débuts et l'évolution de l'hospitalisation du personnel militaire à Tarragone (une ville portuaire située dans le nord-est de l'Espagne). Les origines remontent à 1713, lorsque l'armée bourgeoise occupa l'hôpital de la ville de Tarragone pour soigner ses propres malades et blessés de guerre. Cela a obligé les administrateurs de l'hôpital occupé à louer un nouveau bâtiment pour accueillir les malades pauvres de Tarragone. Cette situation a perduré jusqu'en 1750, lorsque le roi Ferdinand VI a accepté que l'hôpital occupé à la fin de la guerre de Succession d'Espagne combine les fonctions d'hôpital civil et militaire. Depuis lors et jusqu'en 1931, seule une partie de l'hôpital de Tarragone a été consacrée aux soins des militaires, l'armée étant chargée de payer les frais de subsistance de ses troupes.
