La marina española en la obra de José de Vargas y Ponce (1786-1816)

Abstract

History as a scientific activity was improved by the Enlightenment in 18th century Europe. The Spanish historians of the second half of this century were also influenced by the official environment, which was promoting an apologetic reinterpretation of the Spanish history, in order to face the attacks of foreign writers. But, at the same time, there was some criticism of the Hispanic past. The military took part of this movement. This paper is studying this duality through the historical work of the multifaceted naval officer José de Vargas y Ponce (1760-1821), a member of this historical school, through his view of Spanish Marine from the Antiquity and specially his analysis of the Spanish Navy of his time.

Durante el siglo XVIII, la historia como ciencia recibió un gran impulso en la Europa ilustrada. Los historiadores españoles de la segunda mitad de la centuria se vieron influenciados además por el ambiente oficial, que promocionaba una reinterpretación apologética de la historia de España, para hacer frente a los ataques de escritores extranjeros. Pero, al mismo tiempo, se dio una cierta postura crítica del pasado hispano. Los militares ilustrados participaron de este movimiento. Este trabajo se ocupa de la obra histórica del polifacético marino José de Vargas y Ponce (1760-1821), que se inscribe en esta dualidad apología-crítica. En este trabajo me ocuparé de su visión de la Marina española desde la Antigüedad y, en especial, de la Real Armada que le tocó vivir.
