Pasa por ellas la luz: las rejas platerescas y la adaptación de espacios en la Catedral de Ávila

Abstract

[ES] finales del siglo XV y principios del siglo XVI la imponente y defensiva Catedral de Ávila incorporó nuevas obras acordes a los planteamientos del plateresco y del primer Renacimiento. Entre ellas, figuran las espléndidas rejas diseñadas por Fray Francisco de Salamanca y Juan Francés, considerados unos verdaderos revolucionarios del arte de la rejería. Su obra puede contemplarse aún en la Catedral aunque algunas de las piezas fueron despedazadas o terminaron en Museos como el Victoria and Albert de Londres. Este trabajo analiza las innovaciones renacentistas en dichas rejas, cómo la Catedral de Ávila fue en esos años un foco de inspiración renacentista y finalmente cómo los gustos de siglos posteriores propiciaron la pérdida de algunas de las rejas de Juan Francés, dentro de la habitual transformación de espacios en las catedrales [EN] At the end of the 15th century and the first decades of the 16th, the magnificent and military Cathedral of Avila commissioned new art works according to the settings and designs of the traditionally called Plateresque art, or First Renaissance. Among them, we can focus on the gorgeous ironwork screens designed by fray Francisco de Salamanca and Juan Frances, considered by experts as absolute revolutionary iron makers. Their works can be seen even today inside the Cathedral. However, some of these pieces were dismantled or ended in museums such as the Victoria and Albert in London. This research analyses the Renaissance motifs of these screens considering that the Cathedral of Avila was an inspirational focus for artists during that period. Attention is also paid to the curious voyage of the screens, mainly due to changes of taste in the next centuries and also because of the adaptation of spaces in the Cathedral for ritual purposes.
