By contrasting Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963) and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847), this dissertation examines how dissident identities are compelled to fragment themselves due to the impossibility of expressing their authentic selves within a society governed by rigid, prescribed roles of femininity. As a result, both Esther Greenwood and Catherine Earnshaw project their disruptive desires and thoughts onto ‘mad’ doubles, figures that embody the subjectivities they are unable to express publicly. This fragmentation of identity ultimately leads both protagonists to psychological collapse. Through a close analysis of madness and liminal spaces, understood both as spaces of resistance through which the heroines explore their non-normative identities and as patriarchal mechanisms of confinement, the present work seeks to illuminate the literary strategies employed by female authors to represent transgressive identities in literature. Finally, by rejecting both motherhood and marriage, the protagonists follow a ‘queer’ life trajectory that challenges male-defined norms and exposes the structures through which patriarchal society maintains its hegemonic order.Engl.
