A Sociolinguistic Approach to Gender in 21st-Century American Rap: A Comparative Corpus-Based Case Study

Abstract

[EN]Despite being a traditionally male-dominated domain, the increasing popularity of hip-hop music in the last few years has instigated an upsurge in the number of female rappers. This study examines the influence of the sociolinguistic variable of gender in the production of a group of six of the best-selling American rappers during the first decade of the 21st century. For this purpose, two distinct linguistic corpora comprising songs produced by three male and three female rap artists were created and analyzed, assessing their use of gender references, taboo language and expressions of emotion. The results obtained seem to signal the issue of gender as a source of concern for female rappers, with this group making greater use of general gender references than their male counterparts. Moreover, while this approach appears to confirm the stereotypical assumption of women referring more frequently to emotion, it also proves that, through their use of taboo terminology, 21st-century American female rappers may be trying to subvert traditional gender conceptions and redefine their role both in the industry and in society at large. [ES]A pesar de haber sido un ámbito tradicionalmente dominado por hombres, el aumento de la popularidad de la música hip-hop en los últimos años ha promovido un incremento en el número de mujeres raperas. El presente estudio pretende examinar la influencia de la variable sociolingüística del género en la producción musical de seis de los raperos americanos más exitosos del siglo XXI. Con este fin, se crearon y analizaron dos corpus lingüísticos incluyendo canciones producidas por tres raperos y tres raperas, considerando aspectos como el uso que estos hacían de referencias al género, del lenguaje tabú y de expresiones emocionales. Los resultados obtenidos parecen apuntar a la cuestión del género como una fuente de preocupación para las mujeres raperas, ya que este grupo utiliza un mayor número de referencias al género que sus homólogos masculinos. Además, aunque este enfoque parece confirmar el estereotipo según el cual las mujeres hacen referencia a sus emociones con más frecuencia que los hombres, también se ha comprobado que, a través de su uso del lenguaje tabú, las raperas americanas del siglo XXI podrían estar intentando subvertir las concepciones tradicionales de género y redefinir su papel tanto en la industria como en la sociedad en general.
