Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado tiene como objetivo el estudio del álbum To Pimp
a Butterfly (2015) del rapero estadounidense Kendrick Lamar, así como sus implicaciones
sociales y su compromiso en la lucha contra el racismo en los Estados Unidos. En primer
lugar, se abordará la perspectiva de Lamar y su experiencia personal como miembro de la
comunidad negra estadounidense, incidiendo especialmente en la forma artística del álbum y
las fuentes de las que se nutre musicalmente. A continuación, se hablará de la importancia
del trabajo de Lamar a la hora de denunciar las injusticias raciales, de no conformarse,
manteniendo una actitud de killjoy. En tercer lugar, se estudiará la tenacidad del artista a la
hora de abrazar su identidad y defender el poder de su comunidad, resaltando la unión y la
esperanza como principales armas en su música. Por último, utilizaremos la pista del álbum
“Alright” para ejemplificar la ética del amor que Lamar propugna en sus letras.
This Final Degree Project aims to study the album To Pimp a Butterfly (2015)
by the US rapper Kendrick Lamar, as well as its social implications and its commitment to
the fight against racism in the United States. First, Lamar’s perspective and his personal
experience as a member of the US black community will be addressed, with particular
emphasis on the album’s artistic form and the sources from which it draws musically. Later,
we will discuss the importance of Lamar’s work in denouncing racial injustices, not
conforming, maintaining a killjoy attitude. Thirdly, we will study the artist's tenacity in
embracing his identity and defending the power of his community, highlighting unity and
hope as the main weapons in his music. Finally, we will use the album track “Alright” to
illustrate the ethics of love that Lamar espouses in his lyrics.
