Análisis comparativo de la interpretación en la ruta de las especias y en la Compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales

Abstract

[EN] This paper is a study of business interpreting through the cases of the Spice Route in the sixteenth century and the British East India Company in the seventeenth century. To carry it out, we will examine the two situations separately. We will try to determine who the interpreters were in both situations, their training, their social status, their work conditions and the techniques they used. The main aim of this research is to find out what linguistic mediation in commercial exchanges was like in the past and, conversely, to ascertain whether some progress was made in the profession during this period.

[ES] El presente trabajo consiste en un estudio de la interpretación comercial a través de los casos de la ruta de las especias en el siglo XVI y la Compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales en el siglo XVII. Para llevarlo a cabo, analizaremos ambas situaciones por separado; trataremos de determinar quiénes fueron los intérpretes en cada una de ellas, con qué formación contaban, cómo se les consideraba socialmente, cuáles eran sus condiciones laborales y qué técnicas empleaban. El principal objetivo de esta investigación es conocer cómo era la mediación lingüística en los intercambios comerciales en el pasado y a su vez comprobar si se dieron avances y de qué tipo en la profesión durante este período.
