La finalidad de este trabajo es analizar cómo la novela de Emma Tennant Two Women of London revisiona la historia original de Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, a través de la creación de una reescritura feminista posmoderna que permite a Tennant representar críticamente la realidad de las mujeres en Inglaterra durante el gobierno de Thatcher. Para reflejar esto, comienzo con una explicación teórica sobre ciertos conceptos literarios como hipertextualidad, reescritura o revisión. En segundo lugar, analizo las principales transformaciones que han tenido lugar en la obra de Tennant en relación con la original de Stevenson. Para finalizar, examino cómo Tennant hace uso del motivo del doble para denunciar la situación social y económica de las mujeres, así como el impacto de los estereotipos patriarcales, especialmente a través de la figura de Mrs Hyde.
The purpose of this essay is to analyse how Emma Tennant’s Two Women of London revisions Stevenson’s original story, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, through the creation of a postmodern feminist rewriting that allows her to critically depict the reality of women during the period of Thatcherism in 20th-century Britain. In order to prove this, I start by providing a theoretical survey of significant literary concepts such as hypertextuality, rewriting or revision. Secondly, I analyse the major transformations of Tennant’s work with regard to Stevenson’s original novel. Finally, I explore how Tennant makes use of the motif of the double to denounce women’s social and economic situation, as well as, the impact of patriarchal stereotypes, especially through the character of Mrs Hyde.
