All the Young Dudes. J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Belén Gopegui’s Deseo de ser punk: Two Adolescents’ Journey through American and Spanish Societies

Abstract

Este trabajo compara la novela norteamericana de posguerra The Catcher in the Rye de J. D. Salinger y la novela de la crisis Deseo de ser punk, de Belén Gopegui. Se estudiarán los dos contextos socioeconómicos al igual que la situación individual, la personalidad y los principios de los dos protagonistas. El propósito del trabajo es analizar cómo los dos autores crean un personaje joven con una visión crítica y no convencional de su respectiva sociedad y sistema económico. Ambos reflexionan sobre su situación, se evaden de ella, y luchan por mantener su sentido de la autenticidad. También se tratarán los diferentes recursos literarios en común que sirven para caracterizar a los protagonistas, y por tanto, para construir su relación con el contexto.

This paper is a comparative study of the American post-War novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger and Spanish crisis novel Deseo de ser punk by Belén Gopegui. It will study the two different socioeconomic contexts and the protagonists’ individual situation, personality and morals. The purpose is to analyze how both authors create a young character with a critical and unconventional view of their respective society and economic system. They reflect on their situation, evade from reality and pursue their idealist sense of authenticity. The study will also address common literary devices that help to characterize the protagonists and therefore shape their relation to their time period.
