Los intérpretes en las civilizaciones mediterráneas de la Antigüedad. Un análisis comparativo.

Abstract

[ESP] Resumen Este trabajo pretende hacer un estudio comparativo sobre el perfil sociocultural de origen, las condiciones del ejercicio profesional y la posición social y económica de las personas encargadas de ofrecer servicios de interpretación y mediación lingüística en el Antiguo Egipto, la Antigua Grecia y la Antigua Roma, con un enfoque centrado en la Administración y las relaciones diplomáticas. Como períodos históricos representativos de estas amplias épocas de la Antigüedad se han tomado épocas de gran esplendor cultural, territorial y económico: el Imperio Nuevo egipcio (1550-1070 a. C.), donde los intérpretes administrativos eran seleccionados y entrenados y formaban una casta de funcionarios; la colonización griega del Mediterráneo durante la Época Arcaica (776-499 a. C.), durante la cual los conocidos como hermenēis, con una estrecha relación con el comercio marítimo y las relaciones comerciales entre pueblos diferentes, trabajaban de manera generalmente independiente y con un enfoque comercial y no solamente lingüístico, y la Pax Romana (27 a. C.-180 d. C.), el período de mayor extensión territorial del Imperio Romano, donde los interpres eran a menudo representantes de sus pueblos, ahora romanizados, ante sus nuevos gobernantes. El trabajo trata de extraer conclusiones sobre cuestiones antiguas y también actuales como la confianza del cliente y la visibilidad del traductor-intérprete.

[EN] Abstract This paper aims to conduct a comparative study on the professional backgrounds, the conditions of professional practice and the social and economic position of the individuals in charge of providing interpretation and linguistic mediation services in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, with a focus on Administration and diplomatic relations. As representative historical periods of these broad periods of Antiquity, we have selected periods of great cultural, territorial and economic splendor: the New Kingdom of Egypt (1550-1070 B.C.), where administrative interpreters were selected and trained and formed a caste of officials; the Greek colonization of the Mediterranean during the Archaic Period (776-499 B.C.), during which the people known as hermenēis, with close ties to maritime trade and commercial relations between different peoples, worked generally independently and with a commercial rather than just linguistic focus; and the Pax Romana (27 B.C.-180 A.D.), the period of greatest territorial extension of the Roman Empire, where the interpres were often representatives of their now Romanized peoples to their new rulers. This paper attempts to draw conclusions about issues affecting the profession back then and also today, such as client confidence and the visibility of the translator-interpreter to the public.
