Abstract

[EN] The translation of audiovisual humor constitutes one of the most complex matters that tests the abilities and resources of the translator. In Spain, where subtitling and dubbing are the most common methods, translated audiovisual media is consumed on a massive scale, thus highlighting the need to analyze this topic in greater depth. The complexity of translating humor from one culture to another includes the restrictions of the medium and the longevity of audiovisual productions. The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) is an American sitcom full of humorous situations and national, international, linguistic and visual jokes. Through the process of classifying the jokes and analyzing the dubbing and subtitling theories on humor, as well as their implementation and evolution throughout the show, it becomes clear that translating jokes in audiovisual texts is not only a question of linguistics: the translator is confronted with many cultural references in addition to the audio and the visual elements of the production. Identifying the type of joke, valuing its importance and finding a translation in line with audiovisual theories are the challenges a translator comes up against when translating audiovisual humor.

[SP] La traducción del humor audiovisual constituye una de las cuestiones más complejas que ponen a prueba las habilidades y recursos del traductor. En España, donde el doblaje y el subtitulado son las modalidades más comunes, se consumen de forma masiva productos audiovisuales traducidos, lo que evidencia la necesidad de profundizar en esta cuestión. A la complejidad de trasladar el humor entre culturas, se suman las restricciones del medio y la longevidad de las producciones audiovisuales. The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) es una sitcom estadounidense cargada de situaciones humorísticas y de chistes de carácter nacional, internacional, lingüístico y visual. Mediante una clasificación de los chistes y un análisis de las teorías del doblaje y del subtitulado del humor, así como de su puesta en práctica y su evolución a lo largo de las temporadas de la serie, se demuestra que traducir bromas en el ámbito audiovisual no se puede limitar únicamente a cuestiones lingüísticas: el traductor deberá enfrentarse a multitud de referentes culturales y a los medios visual y sonoro. Identificar el tipo de chiste, valorar su importancia y encontrar una traducción que respete las pautas teóricas del medio audiovisual son los retos del traductor.
