John Keat’s “Ode on a Grecian Urn”: the Romantic Pursuit of Truth and Beauty

Abstract

Este trabajo examina el trasfondo filosófico de la poesía romántica en lo referido a la epistemología y a la estética a través del poema de John Keats “Oda a una Urna Griega”. He llevado a cabo un análisis de las nociones románticas sobre la verdad y la belleza y lo he aplicado al poema para demostrar la influencia de la filosofía de los idealistas alemanes en la poesía romántica. En conclusión, el presente trabajo analiza los principales rasgos del trasfondo filosófico del romanticismo para comprender qué es lo que convierte a “Oda a una Urna Griega” en un ejemplo paradigmático de la poesía romántica.

This paper examines the philosophical background of romantic poetry in regards to epistemology and aesthetics through John Keats’ poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn”. I have carried out an analysis of romantic notions of truth and beauty and applied it to the poem to demonstrate the influence of the German idealists’ philosophy on romantic poetry. In conclusion, this paper analyses the main features of Romanticism’s philosophical background in order to understand what makes “Ode on a Grecian Urn” a paradigmatic example of romantic poetry.
