Despair and Renewal in T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land: A Kierkegaardian Reading

Abstract

Esta tesis compara la filosofía del pensador existencialista Søren Kierkegaard con la obra maestra La tierra baldía del poeta T. S. Eliot. Con el propósito de destacar la convergencia entre las nociones de Kierkegaard sobre la fe, presentadas en sus obras La enfermedad mortal y Etapas en el camino de la vida y la resolución transcendental de La tierra baldía, este estudio explora la descripción de Eliot de la crisis espiritual y renovación transcendental en paralelo con los conceptos de desesperación, y la fe como salvación de Kierkegaard. Algunas ideas kierkegaardianas clave como el ser, la desesperación, la alienación y la angustia existencial, se han analizado en relación a la imaginería, estructura y personajes del poema. Finalmente, el poema se ha reinterpretado a través de las tres esferas de existencia postuladas por Kierkegaard, trazando el camino del hombre hacia la trascendencia y renacer espiritual retratado en La tierra baldía.

This paper compares the philosophy of the existential thinker Søren Kierkegaard and T. S. Eliot's masterpiece The Waste Land. With the aim of highlighting the convergence between Kierkegaard's notions of faith, displayed in his works The Sickness Unto Death and Stages on Life’s Way, and The Waste Land's transcendental resolution, this study explores Eliot's depiction of spiritual crisis and transcendental renewal in parallel to Kierkegaard's concept of despair, and faith as salvation. Key Kierkegaardian ideas, such as the self, despair, alienation and existential angst, are analyzed in relation to the poem's imagery, structure and characters. Finally, the poem is reinterpreted through Kierkegaard's three spheres of existence to trace the journey of the modern man towards transcendence and spiritual rebirth.
