La censura en la traducción durante el franquismo: un análisis de Una habitación propia

Abstract

[EN] Censorship in translation is a phenomenon that has shaped the transmission of texts across different historical periods and political contexts. During the Franco regime in Spain,strict control was exercised over translations, particularly those dealing with sensitive topics such as feminism or social criticism. Within this framework, Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own may have been subject to close scrutiny due to its feminist content and its challenge to established power structures. This paper examines whether censorship influenced the translation of this work, while also exploring the translation strategies employed by various translators. It further reflects on the delicate balance between fidelity to the original text and the political constraints of the time, and delves into the crucial role that translation plays in this dynamic.

[ESP] La censura en la traducción es un fenómeno que ha marcado la transmisión de textos en distintas épocas y contextos políticos. Durante el franquismo en España, el régimen ejerció un control estricto sobre todas las traducciones, pero en especial sobre aquellas que abordaban temas sensibles, como el feminismo o la crítica social. Dentro de este marco, la obra de Virginia Woolf, Una habitación propia, podría haber sido objeto de una vigilancia cuidadosa debido a su contenido feminista y su cuestionamiento de las estructuras de poder. En este trabajo analizaremos si la censura afectó a la traducción de dicha obra, a la vez que exploramos las estrategias traductológicas llevadas a cabo por diferentes traductoras. También reflexionaremos sobre la delicada relación entre la fidelidad al texto original y las limitaciones políticas, y profundizaremos en el importante papel que desempeña la traducción en todo ello.
