Afanasy Nikitin’s multilingual travel account: translating an encounter between East and West

Abstract

[EN] Afanasy Nikitin’s Voyage Beyond Three Seas [Khozhenie za tri morya], one of the most famous Old Russian travel accounts, was created in the second half of the fifteenth century, at the boundary of the late medieval and early modern periods. By understanding travel writing as a translation phenomenon, this paper will focus on how this merchant from Muscovite Russia translates an encounter between East and West during his seven-year journey through Persia, India, and other foreign lands, adapting linguistically to the exotic environment. Nikitin’s multilingual travelogue, written in Old East Slavic and a patois of Arabic, Persian, and Turkic, reveals a complex hybrid identity manifested through the traveller’s syncretic Christian-Muslim habits.

[SP] El viaje más allá de los tres mares [Khozhenie za tri morya] de Afanasy Nikitin, uno de los relatos de viaje más famosos de la antigua Rusia, fue escrito en la segunda mitad del siglo XV, en el límite entre la Baja Edad Media y la Edad Moderna. Al entender la literatura de viajes como un fenómeno de traducción, este artículo se centrará en cómo este comerciante de la Rusia moscovita traduce el encuentro entre Oriente y Occidente durante su viaje de siete años por Persia, India y otras tierras extranjeras, adaptándose lingüísticamente al entorno exótico. El diario de viaje multilingüe de Nikitin, escrito en eslavo oriental antiguo y en una mezcla de árabe, persa y turco, revela una identidad híbrida compleja que se manifiesta a través de los hábitos sincréticos cristiano-musulmanes del viajero.
