Atmospheric translations

Abstract

[ENG] The aim of this article is to show how sound can translate knowledge sensorially with the whole body, rather than just with words. Drawing on new approaches from "Sound Studies" and "Sonic Art," the paper applies the concept of "atmosphere" to the artworks of indigenous artist Cecilia Vicuña. The author argues for an expansion of translation studies beyond the linguistic bias, incorporating multimodal and material perspectives. Through Vicuña's performances, the study explores how she uses her voice and chants to create affective translations of the land and the environment, effectively translating corporeally. These "atmospheric translations" serve as spaces where senses, experiences, and emotions become primary means of accessing knowledge

[SPA] El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar cómo el sonido puede traducir conocimiento de manera sensorial y corpórea, más allá de las palabras. Basándose en enfoques contemporáneos de los "Estudios del Sonido" (Sound Studies) y el "Arte Sonoro" (Sonic Art), la autora aplica la noción filosófica de "atmósfera" —entendida como un fenómeno afectivo y espacial— al análisis de las obras de la artista indígena Cecilia Vicuña. El artículo sostiene que la traducción no debe limitarse únicamente a lo lingüístico, sino que debe abrazar perspectivas multimodales y materiales. A través del estudio de las performances de Vicuña, se explora cómo el uso de la voz, los cantos y los murmullos crea "traducciones atmosféricas" que conectan lo humano con lo no humano y el entorno, permitiendo un acceso al conocimiento a través de los afectos, las emociones y el cuerpo.
