Abstract

[ENG] This article stems from the conviction that objects translate emotions through their materiality and through our more-than-five senses. In any experience of exile, displaced emotional objects—laden with meanings and sentiments—tell their own stories. Among the objects that exiled individuals take with them on their journeys, this article focuses on those related to food. Food acquires different meanings across contexts; its original significance in the home country is transformed as it travels to a new environment. Drawing on the anthropology of the senses and on translation studies, this article explores what happens when food embarks on a journey of exile. These ideas are illustrated through examples from migrant literature by Najat El Hachmi, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Pat Mora.

En cualquier experiencia de exilio, los objetos emocionales desplazados, cargados de significados y sentimientos, cuentan sus propias historias. Entre los objetos que las personas exiliadas se llevan consigo en sus viajes, este artículo se centra en los relacionados con la comida. La comida adquiere diferentes significados según el contexto; su significado original en el país de origen se transforma al viajar a un nuevo entorno.
