¿Por qué enseñamos geografía e historia? ¿Es tarea educativa la construcción de identidades?

Abstract

[ES] la tesis es rotunda: la historia y la geografía nacieron como ciencias sociales en el siglo XIX, el siglo de la formación de los Estados-nación. En ese contexto, la historia y la geografía se convirtieron en asignaturas para todos los ciudadanos, porque sirvieron para construir la identidad nacional de cada Estado, tanto en España como en Francia y en todo Occidente. Semejante carácter ha marcado el devenir de la enseñanza de la geografía y de la historia. Por eso, son asignaturas cuyos contenidos provocan polémica política y social. Hoy, sin embargo, pueden cambiar su marca de origen para transformarse en soportes de una nueva identidad, la identidad plural e intercultural que reclama una ciudadanía cosmopolita y tolerante en la actual sociedad global.

[EN] The thesis is clear: the history and geography were born as social sciences in the nineteenth century, the century of the construction of nation-states. In that context, the history and geography became subjects for all citizens, because it served to build the national identity of each state, both in Spain and France and through the West. Such a character has marked the future of the teaching of geography and history. Therefore, they are subjects whose contents are causing political and social disputes. Today, however, these subjects can change their roots to become carriers of a new identity, a plural and intercultural identity which claim a tolerant and cosmopolitan citizenship in today’s global society.
