Iconography of Interpreters in the Conquest of the Americas

Abstract

[ES] Este documento se centra en la figura del intérprete como aparece en las imágenes que ilustran las crónicas visuales, y otros textos de la época de la conquista de las Américas. El hecho de que la mediación lingüística y cultural fuese necesaria para la comprensión entre culturas normalmente no está presente en los registros, como si la comunicación directa hubiese sido posible entre ambas partes. Partiendo del supuesto de que las representaciones visuales son documentos valiosos para comprender la percepción del papel de intérprete en el pasado, se analizan seis imágenes de la autoría de diversos orígenes culturales y étnicos, pintados entre 1550 y 1619.

[EN] This paper focuses on the figure of the interpreter as it appears in the visual images illustrating chronicles and other texts from the period of the Conquest of the Americas by the Europeans. The fact that linguistic and cultural mediation was necessary for an understanding between the cultures is commonly absent from the records, as if direct communication had been possible between both sides-yet another fiction of the encounter. Based on the assumption that visual representations are valuable records to understand the perception of the role of interpreter in the past, we analyze six images of different cultural and ethnic authorship, painted between 1550 and 1619.
