La traducción del "Black English" vernacular en la novela "Si gtita suéltale" de Chester Himes

Abstract

[SP]La presencia de variedades lingüísticas alejadas de la estándar en una obra literaria es una de las principales dificultades a las que se enfrenta un traductor debido a la gran carga cultural que estas entrañan. El caso del Black English Vernacular (BEV) supone un problema añadido puesto que, además de no contar con equivalentes en la cultura española, constituye todo un signo de distinción para la comunidad negra de los Estados Unidos. En este trabajo, se analiza la traducción al español del BEV en la novela de Chester Himes Si grita, suéltale. Para ello, el análisis se centra en aquellos pasajes en los que el empleo del BEV es más significativo con el fin de determinar las técnicas de traducción de las que se ha valido la traductora. De este modo, se acabará demostrando que, aunque existe cierta uniformidad a la hora de trasladar el BEV al español a lo largo de todo el texto, hay fragmentos en los que la traductora opta por la neutralización y otros en los echa mano de la compensación. [EN] Due to the heavy cultural load that non-standard language varieties in literary works carry, preserving their presence in translation is one of the main challenges that a translator faces. The case of Black English Vernacular (BEV) poses a further problem because apart from not having an exact equivalent in the Spanish culture, it represents an important mark of distinction for the black community of the United States. In this study, the translation into Spanish of BEV in the novel If He Hollers Let Him Go by Chester Himes is analysed. To that end, the analysis will focus on the passages in which the use of BEV is most significant in order to discover the translation strategies followed by the translator. Although the translator achieves certain uniformity when rendering BEV into Spanish throughout the whole text, in some fragments she opts for standardising the target language and in others she resorts to compensation techniques.
