[ENG] The purpose of this article is to analyze the hybrid language used in the United States by a generation that thinks brown and writes brown. I refer to the so-called one-and-a-halfers, a generation that includes writers such as Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Pat Mora, Ilan Stavans, Ana Lydia Vega, Ana Castillo, Helena Viramontes, Esmeralda Santiago, and Tato Laviera, among others. I examine how many migrants and refugees use language in ways that disrupt consensus and challenge dominant linguistic norms. It is within these spaces that the migratory movements of the multiple Souths speak back in a language perceived as strange—one that the Establishment fears. In such contexts, translation becomes a tool for raising questions that unsettle the universal promises of monolingualism.
[SPA] El propósito de este artículo es analizar el lenguaje híbrido utilizado en Estados Unidos por una generación que piensa en marrón y escribe en marrón. Me refiero a los llamados one-and-a-halfers, una generación que incluye a escritores como Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Pat Mora, Ilan Stavans, Ana Lydia Vega, Ana Castillo, Helena Viramontes, Esmeralda Santiago y Tato Laviera, entre otros. Examino cómo muchos migrantes y refugiados emplean el lenguaje de maneras que rompen el consenso y cuestionan las normas lingüísticas dominantes. Es en estos espacios donde los movimientos migratorios de los múltiples sures responden en una lengua percibida como extraña, una lengua que el establishment teme. En tales contextos, la traducción se convierte en una herramienta para plantear preguntas que desestabilizan las promesas universales del monolingüismo.
